The Expat Mentality

Having been slightly overwhelmed by the stress of trying to push myself forward for jobs that don’t actually exist, I decided that perhaps spending a little time looking at all the fun and exciting things I could do whilst in Singapore and not at work would be a nice way to pass the time. It’s a melting pot of cultures, cuisines and has a rich history of West and East conflict – there’s surely a huge amount that I need to see!
I started my search where I start all my searches, on the Google homepage with an utterly ridiculous search phrase along the lines of “Top things to see and do in Singapore”. The initial results looked promising – lots of pages instructing people how to make the most of a 24-hour stop over in the city, which I assume is how most people see and experience Singapore. So far, so good.  That is, until I clicked through the lists.
Every single Top Ten list I found recommended at least one mosque, one walk (mostly around China Town), hotels where you can see art (slightly less interesting) and the best spots for quick, no questions asked lunchtime plastic surgery. Follow that up with some super cheap electrical goods and apparently Singapore has all you could possibly ask for.
None of these things were exactly what I was expecting…Thankfully, on further investigation I managed to find some brilliant old buildings to look around, sites focusing on the art and architecture of the area and a lot of historical locations to see. However, it has flagged a warning that perhaps some people in Singapore are not going to be in exactly the same mind set as me when I’m there. Duly noted. Thank God Nick is just as much of a geek as I am!
