We’ve spent one full weekend in Singapore since I arrived
almost a month ago, so it’s only fair that we run away this weekend somewhere
new and exciting!
When I was
living in London I had a rule that I would go home at least once a month to see
my family and witness baby Charlie growing a little bit older.
Now that a quick trip home would
take around 13 hours one way, I’ve somehow managed to persuade Nick that those
monthly weekends ought to be used travelling the local area and doing what I
said I would do when I decided to move – get some seriously travelling done.
When I was explaining to people
that I was relocating to Singapore, one of the things I always said (whether I
really believed it or not) was that I wanted to see all those places that other
people ticked off over their gap years but that I had never planned to
investigate before – although admittedly, I was aiming for less backpacking and
hostels, more taxis and hotels. I suppose now it’s time to start actually
having a look around.
We went to
Thailand in January, so February will be the month of Malaysia – the island of
Penang to be precise. We’re there for two nights along with our friends Liv and
Flash who will no doubt help us explore the less cultural side of town. We’ll
be staying in the bustling George Town on Friday night, to see the sites, eat
way too much curry and have a couple of drinks – hopefully in the rotating bar
on the top of our hotel. Then by Saturday evening we will have relocated out to
the beach, ready for sunbathing time and a High Tea on Sunday before flying
home, ready to work on Monday.
I’m
definitely not going to say that it’s better than a weekend at home with the family,
but it’s certainly going to be different. Bring on the curry!
