We have a pool and
gym at our condo, and whilst I have used the pool a fair few times (although
not as much as I ought to) I have not yet managed to get myself back into quite
such a good exercise routine as I was working with back in London. Yes, I’m new
to the area and I want to spend some time investigating all the fun things that
there are to do, but unless I start doing some exercise soon it’s all going to
start going a bit wrong!
Having
spent some time reading recommendations and suggestions in Expat Living, a
lifestyle magazine that Nick got me a subscription for at Christmas, I came
across something that I thought sounded fun. Or mental – I couldn’t quite work
out which. Still, I decided that it was worth giving it a shot and seeing how I
got on.
Aquaspin is exactly what it sounds like
– it’s a spinning class (stationary bikes, loud music, shouting instructor)
that takes place in a chest deep swimming pool, using the resistance of the
water to make it more effective and less jarring on your joints. It sounded
weird, so I obviously signed up for a class!
The session
took place in a rooftop, open-air swimming pool handily placed midway between
our flat and my office, so it was a quick walk through Fort Canning Park to get there.
Once I was
swimwear ready (or as ready as I would ever be) I spent quite a while adjusting
the bike from mini-me size (everyone here is about waist high to me) so that my
knees didn’t hit my chin every time, and then I was good to go!
By half
seven the sun is beginning to set in Singapore, so the backdrop to our session
was really rather love – the sun was setting over the edge of the pool, and
then we completed the cool down portion of the 45 minute session looking up at
the stars and enjoying a laser show from a club somewhere off in the distance.
It was a
strange sort of experience. It wasn’t quite as hard as I thought it would be,
but when I eventually got home I was awake for about twenty minute while I ate
and had a cup of tea and then I passed out and slept solidly for about nine
hours straight. I suppose I must have worked harder than I thought, which is
handy, because I might have signed up fro the rest of the term!
