Run away home (from home)

It’s been a tough week, and a couple of shockingly intense weeks at work too. With everyone leaving the country for the long weekend, we decided that we too needed a bit of a break, and where better than our home-from-home in KL. It was time to go back to The Majestic.
The trip was very much the same as the last two trips that we have taken to this glorious hotel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur – it was fabulous. I arrived sad, tired and unwilling to play, but as always, The Majestic did it's best to make the world a better place for me.
Following the quick 45-minute flight and the 30 minute train into town we were at the hotel around an hour and a half after having taken off from Changi airport. Following a lovely lunch we were offered a free up-grade, not because our room was late being ready, but because it wasn’t ready for us early. Yet again, their service was second to none for the entire trip!
With an even nicer suite than normal (which is really saying something) we checked in and from 3:30-6:30, we slept. My brain was sad and Nick is always tired, so there was no question of either of us doing anything other than taking a very long, and very much needed mammoth nap.

Because sometimes, sleep is the only way forward

I woke up first and booked us in for dinner at a restaurant downstairs that we had not tried before. By 7:30 we were just about awake and ready to go, so we went and booked Nick in for his wet shave the following day, and discovered a room called The Screening Room, which plays back to back classic cartoons and Fred Astaire films non-stop, 24 hours a day. Every time we go to the Majestic, even when it feels like life sucks, they surprise me with yet another little slice of amazingness.

Cocktails and jazz at the bar

After a quick pre-dinner cocktail in the main bar where we had not been before as we are normally side-tracked by the fabulous Smoke House bar, we had our dinner in the main restaurant, accompanied by a jazz quartet accompaniment. We made our way through a very English supper of prawns, soup, steak and lamb chops before heading back up to our room. We took the second half of our wine from dinner, and ordered our desserts (yes, they had Happy Crumble with cinnamon custard) and a pot of tea (their amazing Boh blend, which Nick is obsessed with) to be brought up too.  From there, we didn’t move again until breakfast time.

Happy Crumble, wine and tea. All good things.

After an amazing bath, a huge breakfast and another nap Nick went to brave the cutthroat razor before we had a quick round of tea and scones for lunch and then headed back to the airport.

Morning coffee the way it ought to be served

It’s amazing how being somewhere that feels just one more bit like home, even if you’re still in the middle of Asia, can make the world feel like a much more manageable place. I am already thinking about when I can go back again.

Nick being a lot braver than I would be
