Palo Alto dinner plans

It might have required an hour-long journey (a shuttle, the Bart train and the CalTrain), but having survived day one of my training and the journey, I was very excited to spend my Monday evening having dinner with Heidi and Charlie at their lovely house in Palo Alto.
They met me from the train (the CalTrain is a double decker shiny black machine – it’s a far cry from the SouthernRail trains that used to take me home each weekend - how very exciting!) and we made our way to a very cute local bar for a quick drink before dinner. It’s amazing how you can all be living a completely different life since you last met up – I’ve moved to Singapore, they’ve been married and relocated to American, but when it comes down to it, we all just picked up exactly where we left off, and it was great to see them and to have a proper chance to chat.
After a nice little glass of wine, we made our way over to their house, which was utterly lovely! They had lit it all up with Christmas style lights, the table was laid and ready for us, the dinner had been made and just needed bringing out of the over, and the chocolate biscuits and tea for dessert was also all laid out and ready to go.
Dinner was a delicious serving of meatballs and ‘eggplant’ with salad and tasty yoghurt dressing, which Heidi had whipped up for us specially.  Then there was tea and biccy’s on the sofa whilst we continued to catch up and try to make some plans for more visits in the future (although it really is a very long journey).
Eventually, with the time zone issues and the promise of another super early night, I had to concede that it was time to make my way home. As it was past 10pm, it was looking like the trip back over might take me up to two hours to complete. Heidi, being an absolute star actually volunteered to drive me the full 50 minutes back in the end, so armed with a couple more treats and some very cheesy music, we drove a full loop around the bay and back over to Emeryville and reality for this week.
