Yesterday
evening, for the first time since moving to Singapore, I was able to introduce
Nick to a friend of mine who lives in Singapore and who he didn’t already know
through one of the many strings of expat communication that seems to bind the
entire white community together over here.
Admittedly this was a friend from
London who has also recently relocated, so I haven’t actually acquired a new
friend (which is currently still something on my To Do List, but I think it
still counts!
Mike used to be a client of mine
when we both lived back in London, but we arrived in Singapore during the same
week and with my change of job, we are now in direct competition with each
other within the market. There are only really two companies doing what we do in
the region, and as we have the exact same job titles for our rival firms, it
should probably be a bit tense and a little awkward when we meet up. It’s not.
We went and got drunk on margaritas and it was just as it always has been
(except we’re going to struggle to make expenses pay for our socials now).
Mike moved out here with his lovely
girlfriend Tilly, so whilst Nick wanted to be out drinking with his work colleagues,
he apparently felt that it would be inappropriate for him to not come along to
meet the two of them, so we spent a lovely evening sitting outside in the gradually
darkening evening, soaking up the cooler heat of the day, drinking margaritas
and nibbles of Mexican snacks – ooh, I love guacamole!
I think that the highlight of the
evening for me was when Mike confirmed that he just really wants to achieve
full expat status. He wants to do all the fun things, play all the good games
and will join in pretty much any outing or adventure that he hasn’t already
signed up for. This is just what I need – a super keen, slightly mental friend who
isn’t scared to be ridiculous. I can’t wait to get planning!
