When Nick
invited me along on one of his work jollies to see Eric Clapton live, I
naturally said yes – more because of my love of going out to play rather than
my love of Clapton, but I’m so glad that I went!
It was one of the strangest concerts
I have ever been to. There was no support acts or preliminary music to get the
crowd going, it was just straight into full-blown Clapton mode. It was an
entirely seated affair, even right up at the stage, so whilst you maybe wouldn’t
imagine dancing around with your hands in the air to some of Clapton’s music,
it seemed incredibly strange to be entirely static throughout the whole event.
The seven of us bobbed along to the music, with a bit of toe-tapping and upper
body dancing, but the majority of the crowd just sat and watched / filmed the
whole thing on their smart phones. It was as though they were at the theatre
rather than a music concert. Most bizarre!
Still, ignoring the slightly bizarre
atmosphere, we had a great time. There
were songs that I didn’t recognise, as well as some of the classics that we
used to hear all the time while we were growing up. I Shot The Sheriff in particular reminded me of my brother for some
reason, and Tears in Heaven was an
obvious fav!
There’s a chance I might be
listening to some of the best moments at my desk this morning. It’s not as good
as it was live, but some songs just always sound amazing!
