Having
spent my day very productively shopping, cleaning, swimming and sorting, last
night was slightly less controlled and constructively spent.
Jules had invited me along on a
girls night out with her old house mate, who is a teacher at one of the
Singapore international schools. Along
with six other teachers, we made our way out to Kinky, a really lovely roof top bar in the city, for a couple of
cocktails before heading out to local club, Zouk.
It was nice to meet up with a group
of people who are entirely different to pretty much everyone else I’ve met
since I’ve been out here. All of the people that I have met through work are
either Londoners or locals, and everyone I’ve met through Nick are career
driven, work-hard-play-hard types, which is great fun and they are all lovely,
but it was pretty refreshing to spent an evening out with a group of teachers –
fun loving and chilled out, they just wanted to have a good time and they
seemed to be enjoying the freedom of being out and about.
Maybe it was because it was the first time I had been out in the city
with just a group of girls who had no interest in who or what was going on
around them, or perhaps it was because they are all horribly drunk and slightly
out of control before I even arrived at the bar where they were drinking, but
something about the evening reminded me of home. We spent a great evening working our way
around a couple of city bars before heading to Zouk – a three floor club set
slightly back from the river, it had a strange Asian-Ibiza vibe to it, and
whilst it was far from packed out (nothing in Singapore ever is), it was pretty
busy and had a good vibe going on when we arrived at around midnight.
Whilst a couple of the teachers were great fun – I have a feeling I’ll
be befriending Charlotte and Mel once I get back from the US in a couple of
weeks – a few of the others were a little worse for wear before we even got to
the club. One disappeared somewhere between the taxi ride from the bar and
arriving at the club, and another one ended up sitting on the floor feeling
sorry for herself before being taken home early (you can take the girls out of
Essex!).
As the late starters, myself and Jules decided to stay out a bit longer,
and so we enjoyed ourselves, dancing in the middle of a lot of locals who
seemed both confused and entertained by the two token white girls in a club
full of Asians. I supposed maybe that doesn’t happen all that often. Thankfully
they were all just very friendly, and not in a gross pervy way, so we had a
great few hours of dancing and making friends with the locals before we called
it a night at about 2am, making out way out to the taxi rank, high heels in
hand.
