Feeling slightly ridiculous, this Monday evening turned into another down
day for me. I’m not sure whether it’s because I spoke to Katya during the day
and got upset at the fact that half my family won’t be in town when we go back,
or because the planning for our return home in just under two weeks once again
reminded me that I miss being at home all the time, but whatever the reason,
when I got back to the flat for Bolognese and Game of Thrones night, which I
had been excited about all day, I was feeling utterly flat and entirely
unenthused. Both dinner and GoT happened, but sadly neither of them proved to
be at all as excited as I had hoped for.
Having called it an
early night in an attempt to sleep it off, the next day dawned as early as
always, but equally as miserable for some reason. As it was a public holiday in
Singapore I opted out of my usual morning swim and instead set up camp on the
sofa to watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (from the 30-Before-30 films list - only two left to go!)
and try to work out what to do with my day.
Nick had opted to work
to win back one extra holiday day in lieu so that we have equal amounts left
for the rest of the year, so by 9:30 I was on my own waiting for Clint Eastwood
to find the gold and let his horse have a bit of a rest.
When I have a down day (feel ‘dumpy’
as my Grandma would explain her low periods) there is nothing much that I want
to do, but as nothing is greater than my hatred of a wasted day, I knew that I
had to at least start the day well. So, having ticked another film off the list
I set about being productive. I cleaned a little, swam, got dressed and headed
out to a Sebastiao Salgdao exhibit at the National Museum of Singapore that
I have wanted to see for quite some time. At least that ticked a couple of things off the list.
From there, still feeling glum, I decided it was time to pull out the
big guns, so I went for German food. Whilst Happy Crumble is the ultimate mood
fixer, sometimes you have to try out other options before reaching for the
crumble, so currywurst, giant pretzels, beer and a bit of time sitting amongst
German people was the next plan of action. Two hours later, full to the top and
slightly hazy from two pints of very strong beer I was starting to feel a bit
better but still not 100% right.
It had to happen. I went home via the shops and for the first time since
I’ve lived in Singapore, two Happy Crumbles were made, one for now and the
other for the freezer. I then set up camp on the sofa, with full aircon and a
duvet for comfort (like when you used to have sick days from school). I opted
out of the evening BBQ plans, and I spend the rest of the day on the sofa,
eating Happy Crumble, watching Rocky films and slowly sorting myself out.
Following an early night and an early enough start for a swim this
morning, I am now back on track and feeling way better. There is nothing that a
good currywurst, Happy Crumble and Rocky afternoon can’t fix. At least, I hope
there isn’t.
