Every Wednesday evening, Singapore tries to drag ladies out of their
homes to get them out on the town and drinking to keep the alcoholic male-dominated
work force entertained. A selection of bars and clubs will have special offers
for women, with either discounted or free drinks on offer for portions of the
evening. I suppose the plan is to get ladies drunk straight after work and to
entice them out for a lengthy drunken night on the tiles on what would
otherwise be a fairly slow night.
So far, I haven’t yet
ventured out on a full-blown, well-planned ladies night. I suppose that you if
you do your research you can probably tour the town and have a fairly messy
night for minimal cost. Maybe I’ll do that when Debbie is here – I don’t think
that’s something I need to get too used too, as midweek drinking is never going
to be good for my waistline, let alone my poor liver!
Last night I did have
plans to meet up with Jules, but rather than going out and getting horrendously
drunk we were intending to attend an international mixers night, to meet other
expats and to see what the events are like and whether they’re worth attending
in the future.
We met straight from
work at a bar on Boat Quay called Red Dot, which is a local Singaporean owned
and operated micro-brewery. Jules was there with a couple of her colleagues who
had just finished a training dy. It wasn’t exactly the most ladylike start to
the night but we had a couple of drinks there before the others headed home and
Jules and I made a plan of where to go next.
Two drinks in, the
mixers night didn’t really seem that tempting, so instead we opted to try and
go to a rooftop bar called Lantern for a quieter drink and a bit of a catch up.
This plan failed as rain started falling just as we arrived. We detoured to
Five Bar and ended up bumping into Nick and his colleagues. After one very
quick drink just to be polite, we scuttled away (I didn’t want to cramp his
style when he was out with the boys) arriving at a lovely water side bar called
Pelican, where we settled in for one last glass of wine and a portion of chips
to share whilst we nattered away and set the world to rights.
Eventually it was home
time, so we jumped on the MRT and made our way back to our respective flats for
a very reasonable bedtime after a lovely night out. I definitely can’t say the
same for Nick who I think will be feeling slightly worse for wear whilst making
his way through today!
