Today was an absolute stinker. With it being a short week as I was out
of the office on Monday and will be again tomorrow, Thursday turned into the
day from hell, with everything that could go wrong going wrong. It was tense
and passed in a blur of disorganisation and stress.
Thankfully I had a hard
cut off point by which time I would need to leave the office, and that’s
because I had managed to persuade Nick that he would enjoy coming to see
Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake with me. To be honest, he was actually fairly
willing to come along, and as he wasn’t complaining too much on the way over, I
had a feeling it might be a bit of a success. That is, until we got there.
By the time we had
arrived at the theatre my day of dread had thankfully finished, and so I lined
up a couple of glasses of wine and a sandwich picnic for us to enjoy before we
went in. The situation was entirely different for Nick, who had to drag himself
away from a hive of activity, and who was therefore on his phone trying
desperately to close a deal in the final few minutes before the show started.
Once we were in the
theatre and the ballet had started there was nothing to do but sit back and
enjoy the show, which is exactly what I did! It was as good as it always is
(this might be my fourth time seeing it), and by the interval I was as wrapped
up in the story as ever.
Nick was a bit confused
about the gay swan love story that developed just before the interval, so I did
my best to talk him through the story and explain what had happened, and what
there was still to come.
It turns out I failed
to achieve this. When the final curtain fell I turned around, tears in eyes of
course, to see what he thought of it. “It’s very impressive to watch, but I
haven’t had a f*cking clue what’s been going on for the last three hours.”
Maybe not a complete
success story, but hey, it was worth a try. Perhaps next time I’ll take a
little longer to explain the story line before we go in…
