For Nick’s birthday, as part of the ruse to make him think that he
wasn’t going to get The Watch I gave him a selection of envelopes, each with a
little treat inside. These treats included: a day at the horse racing, a boat
trip with afternoon tea included, breakfast in bed (food and date to be
requested) and dinner at a very lovely looking French restaurant near our flat
called Balzac that we’ve both had our eye on for a while, but that we have been
waiting for a good reason to try out.
So far Nick has not
chosen to cash in any of his vouchers, but following our bike adventures and
with Monday off work, Sunday night felt like a great day for getting a little
dinner and a glass of wine out on the town, and so the Balzac card was presented
for use.
As we were both in a
bit of a state having not thought about the rest of our day, we showered and
changed ready to go out and play. I got changed and ready first while Nick
chatted to a couple of friends on Skype, then he disappeared to get ready while
I tided away the washing up.
From the bedroom
emerged Nick in a full suit (his new one, tailored in Thailand), complete with
tie (that I gave him as a birthday present in the past), posh cufflinks and
polished shoes. It’s so hot in Singapore that clothes like this never make an
appearance, so it was a bit of a shock – and a very impressive effort at
dressing for dinner. Heels were obviously essential for this dinner too, so I
opted for some insanely high ones, and then we walked the ten minutes to the
restaurant (slowly, to deal with the heat) ready for dinner.
It was utterly worth
it! We had a lovely evening, just the two of us, drinking a little wine, eating
a lot of French food, and enjoying finally being on the right side of the big
New York style shiny windows at Balzac.
The food was great –
almost too good. It definitely feels like the sort of place that we will be back
to, and as it’s so close to home, probably a lot more than is good for us!
