I love playing host – always have, always will, so imagine my joy (and
Nick’s misery) when we woke up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning to
start preparations for another little dinner party at our lovely flat.
With a list of meat and
veggies to collect from Tekka wet market, we were out the door and on our way
by 8am, which to Nick’s mind is disgustingly early for a non-work day. On the
contrary, if I am in a bit of a bad mood, an early start and lots of jobs is
the perfect way to lift me back up again!
Tekka was full to the
brim as always, but as we were just about early enough to beat the major crowds
and avoid the disgusting hot-meat smell that kicks in at around 9am and gets
worse with every minute that passes. We made it through our green Thai curry
shopping list in good time, and we even found a new ‘meat guy’, our new buddy
Jo.
Manning the only
butchers stall in Tekka that sells beef and lamb, and with his own handmade
spicy flavoured sausages on offer (it’s impossible to get proper sausages out
here), he is officially my new favourite stall owner. Even better, his meat
massively undercuts the main Australian butchers that you find around Singapore,
so when he handed us a business card and instructed us to give him a call if we
had any specific demands, we knew that we would definitely be in touch again in
the future!
Once we had gathered all
our items, we headed back to the flat to clean, cook, prepare and, if you were
Nick, to nap ahead of the evening’s excitement. I was in my happy place all
day, so the homesick blues had well and truly left me by the time that Sita,
Kev and Jules arrived for a fair few rounds of drinks, Thai lamb and lemon
drizzle cake for dessert. Nick also got to try out the new drinks cabinet,
which he was obviously incredibly excited about. All in all, it was a great
success.
