Back to school - Number 17

I get a lot of mockery for my love of GroupOn – our friend Flash calls them food vouchers for the middle classes, but regardless, my love of a good bargain means that my morning will often start with a quick scroll through my daily GroupOn emails before I start work.
Last week, I found an absolute bargain offer for ten golf lessons, most of them held at a driving range, and the final two out on the local golf course. Not only have I always wanted to learn, or to at least try it out to see if I like it, golf is also on the 30-Before-30 List, and if I get to learn in the warm and the sun, I figured that now was the perfect time to get cracking.

Sunday was thankfully a nice sunny day, so whilst Nick continued to sleep, I snuck out of the flat and jumped in a taxi for a twenty-minute journey north. The driving range was not at all what I expected – nestled in amongst a range of office blocks and hotels, the three storey, open sided building was a far cry from the sort of driving ranges they have back in the roll hills of the Shire.
My lesson was due to take place on the top level, along with two other local women and a young boy (whose frown-faced mother looked like she would have paid good money for the maid to have bought the boy along – what a treat she was!). As this was lesson 1 of 10, and we were all beginners, we spent the hour working on our grip and stance, firing as many balls as our bucket could carry from the machine.
By the end of the hour I felt like I had made some progress, and if I had a full day with nothing to do, I would happy have gathered another 50 balls to work my way through before heading home. Maybe next week I will hang around a bit longer before or afterwards to get a bit more practise in. So class one was a success – I just hope that it keeps getting better, because I think golf could be something that I happily fill a full Sunday with, but we’ll have to see how it shapes up once I make it past the most basic introductory sessions.
