This is going to sound like an awful thing to say when I am supposed to
be off on an adventure, but I sort of miss TV. Don’t get me wrong, we have a TV
linked up to a hard drive that’s jam-packed with box set and films, and there
is more than enough going on out here to keep me busy and very entertained, but
I realised this weekend that I miss the routine of coming in from work and the
same shite being on the TV at the same time each day.
It’s strange that
there’s no Eastenders omnibus on
Sundays, and there’s no new BBC dramas to become addicted to and have to watch
on catch up. On that point, there’s no BBC iPlayer at all – who knows what
magical things I might be missing! There could be new series of The Great British Bake Off, or Masterchef, or some stupid English
comedy that everyone hates but I absolutely love (thinking along the lines of Miranda). And don’t even get me started
on the Channel 4 comedy that might be passing me by. If I miss out on new
episodes of Fresh Meat or similar then
I’m am going to have to spend my entire trip back home in May playing catch up!
Having spent some time
thinking about it, there’s a slight chance that my missing of TV is more about
missing the people and the places that TV used to feature in my life at home.
Mamu, for some reason, had a deep-rooted love of the ridiculous Eastenders which prevents her from ever
missing an episode (hence the reliance
on the weekend omnibus) and the girls in London would always join me on the
sofa to catch up on bake offs and cooking shows. Perhaps this is just my brain
gently introducing the idea of being a bit home sick without making me go
full-on crazy about it.
There’s only one thing
for it – I’m going to have to make a lot more plans to fill all the free time I
have. If there’s never sofa time, there’s going to be no time to miss my old sofa
companions. Although I am supposed to be working through three series of Game of Thrones before the new series
starts next week…sofa avoidance could be tricky…
