Whenever I make a plan to meet people for brunch in Singapore, I have to
confirm what exactly I mean by ‘brunch’. When I say brunch, I mean eggs, maybe
pancakes at a stretch, a glass of two of mimosas and a nice coffee. When you
say brunch in Singapore though, there’s always a chance that the people you met
are anticipating an all you can eat, free flow champagne, four-hour feast. I
imagine it can lead to some fairly awkward meetings, so I feel it’s best to
always be as specific about plans as possible!
This Saturday morning
we had made a plan to meet a good friend of mine from London and his girlfriend
for my interpretation of brunch at a cute little café restaurant out in the
green fields of central Singapore.
Riders Café is a very quiet, fairly secret little spot that Nick
and Kev discovered by accident last year when a midday tee-time proved way too
hot for them to handle. Plonked in the middle of the Singapore countryside
there is a riding stables and a golf course, surrounded by nothing but green, complete
with a slightly elevated restaurant with a small balcony that looks out over
the horse training yard and stables.
We had been looking
forward to eating amongst the hustle and bustle of the yard, but unfortunately
Saturday morning was soaking wet, with heavy rain from 7-10am and constant
drizzle for the remainder of the day. There were still horses, and the yard was
still a nice different backdrop from your normal Singapore scene, but it was slightly
less active than we had been anticipating. Not great timing for the first rain
since I’ve been living in Singapore!
Still, whilst the damp
air made the view slightly less active, the brunch was fantastic, and we passed
a fabulous few hours eating, chatting and planning our next big adventures.
It’s strange how much I really appreciate having just one face from home that I
know, but it’s always great to meet up with Mike, and I really hope that we’ll
be able to rope him in to some more fun plans soon.
I hope I get to go back
to Riders Café for breakfast again
soon too – they had delicious eggs and bacon breakfasts, and a truly ridiculous
sweet brioche pudding to follow. It was a naughty start to a Saturday, but it
was definitely worth it!
