For the past few months there has been a slight ominous looking “Drinks
with The Godfather” event booked into my diary for Tuesday night. All I knew
was that Nick’s Godfather would be in town for one day, that he only ever calls him
Nicolas, and that it was likely I would have to be on best behaviour. It was
tense.
Thankfully, when the
day of the dinner arrived, Nick informed me that The Godfather was actually passing through Singapore on his way to a family holiday in Bali, that he would be accompanied by two of his three children (who are 18
and 21), and his lovely wife, and that all they were after were a couple
of drinks and a nice dinner.
As they had just flown
in that morning we went for a safe yet impressive approach, assuming that they would need to be sleeping by about half nine, and so we would need to keep things local and easy to handle. No crazy Singaporean Hawker centres for this particular dinner then. Following the same approach as when Debbie had just flown in, we took them for
drinks with a view at the top of 1-Altitude before heading for Chinese food
galore at the UOB tower restaurant that Nick loves. Admittedly we reversed the order of our night out from when Debbie was in town, and rather than ending the night dancing on the roof top bar into the wee small hours, we saw a lovely sunset from up there, and then went on to a more sedate dinner with just a little glass of wine on the side.
What I had been afraid
would be a stuffy and very sedate evening turned out to be great fun. The kids
were comical and more than happy to talk nonsense throughout the dinner, and
both Chris and Liz were lovely, which made for a really great (although pretty
excessive) Tuesday dinner.
By the end of the night
there was an invite for another dinner before they flew out of the country the
following day, and Nicolas was even being referred to as Nick. I think it’s
fair to say that it was a pretty successful evening!
