It’s been ten years this week since I was dropped off at university by
my mum and Catherine, with a car full of books, folders, bedding and kitchen
pans, and armed with all the essentials for making friends – two bottles of
wine, some mini pretzels, a packet of pasta, tuna, sweet corn and teabags. I was ready for university life!
Over the next few days
I made friends with the girls on my corridor, meeting in the kitchen to drink
tea in the mornings, eat toast in the afternoons and drink wine in the
evenings. As is required during Freshers Week we went out in search of the
campus poster sales to decorate our rooms, and Freshers Fairs to join societies
and sign up for social groups that we all quickly discovered we had no
intention of actually attending.
It was during these
first few weeks that I met and befriended the girls who I spent every single
day of the next three years with, who I lived with for the following 9 years
(in different arrangements and selections), and who are still my nearest and
dearest to this day, event though I had to leave them all back in the UK when I
moved out to Singapore.
We’ve been through an
awful lot together, so here’s to the next ten years girls!
