When in doubt, shimmy!

This Saturday evening had been set aside for a double birthday celebration, and so after a very quiet day we headed out to Robertson Quay to get cracking on celebration number one.
First up was Guy’s birthday – one of Nick’s colleagues but who we see quite a bit of and share a number of friends with. There was around 10 of us gathered to celebrate with Mexican food and nibbles out by the river. As with all good birthday celebrations there was even a cake wheeled out just before we had to leave – a peanut butter and chocolate monster that put me on a sugar high for the next few hours!
Next up we were going to find Mike and Tilly – the only friends I have that came from London at pretty much the same time as me, so there was no way that I was going to miss his birthday fun times.
We met at a fabulous French place in the new ‘up and coming’ part of town, where we found a group of three couples nestled around a table, drinking wine and engaging in very grown up conversation. Our arrival obviously signalled the end of the good behaviour, and as the couples started to drift away we began to make our next plan for the last portion of the evening.

French elegance in Singapore

When it was just the four of us left Mike announced that another group of their friends were out dancing at Brix, and that we were all going to join them. Having never braved Brix before, a group trip with friends felt the like best time to venture forth.
Brix is the bar / nightclub located below the Grand Hyatt hotel in Singapore, and it’s famous for having live music, a great atmosphere, staying open later than most other places in Singapore, and for having some really classy hookers regardless of what time or day you visit.
Singapore has a couple of bars where ‘ladies of a questionable reputation’ gather and make deals to make their money, so this has become a fairly acceptable element of nights out here (not the hiring of the hookers, but their presence in the darker corners of streets/bars, depending on where you go), but I had never been to this particular bar to see if for myself. As everyone had told me, it was really just a great bar for dancing, and as soon as we were in the door and had ordered a drink we made our way through the massive crowds of expats just out having a good night until we found the group of friends we were joining.
New friends located we headed to the dance floor and pretty much took over the whole space. I was having an absolute ball until Nick informed me that his ex-girlfriend (from around 5 years ago who we knew was moving to Singapore the week before but who I was hoping to never have to meet) was one of the girls dancing directly next to us. Knowing that this would lead to an awkward chat and introduction I proceeded to shimmy my way over to Mike and Tilly in an attempt to power through the awkward.
It was fine really, she seemed very nice and I was more than happy to be introduced, but I was also very happy to be with Mike when that intro was made. He’s one of the few people in the world who understands the importance of a good solid shimmy and ridiculous dance off when you’re not sure what else to do with yourself. From now on, whenever I’m in doubt, I will find Mike, and we shall shimmy.
