Tonight was just the warm up sessions for the
racing, but that doesn’t mean that I was willing to miss more than a few
minutes of the action!
Having
nipped out of work quite early at the end of the day I headed straight over to
Nick’s office to hand over his ticket for the day and to make our way over to
the entrance gates to the event.
Once
we were in (with poncho and ear plugs purchased) we very quickly found the guys
who had flown in from Thailand for the event, helped by the fact that they were
at the very first place selling beer that we stumbled across. We bought a nice
cool beer to recover from the slightly too warm walk over, and then it was time
to go and look at some cars.
Apparently
machines spend almost an entire day scrubbing down the roads of Singapore in
the days when the track is closed off to ensure that it’s 100% safe for the
speed that the cars will travel. Unfortunately, this level of cleanliness is
actually a bit dangerous, so Friday hosts a series of classic car races, with
the crazily loud old engines flying around the track ‘laying down rubber’ to
get it all ready for the big boys. The current F1 cars then had two blocks of
time to practise on the track and get used to the corners and all those other
things that they do during practise laps.
Whilst
we watches the cars as much as possible, the main action ended pretty early on
Friday night, so we went and found a bar that was nestled next to one of the
live performance stages to have a couple more drinks whilst enjoying the
festival atmosphere.
As
the Phuket boys tried to work out whether they needed to go to a karaoke bar or
nightclub, Nick and I made our excuses and headed home ready for a full weekend
of fun!
